Fruita
is located in west-central Colorado within Grand Valley along the Colorado River. It's about 18 miles from the Utah border. As of the 2010 census, the population of Fruita was 12,646 residents. With its' located in the high desert of Colorado, Fruita offers spectacular scenery and lots of thrilling outdoor activities. The town began as a fruit producing center, and in recent years, it's been the winner of the Governor's Smart Growth and Development Award four years in a row. Some of the popular activities in the area include whitewater rafting and kayaking, mountain biking, hiking and four-wheeling on desert trails. If you're not the thrill-seeking type, but prefer a more relaxing type of outdoor fun, Fruita is also home to ten golf courses. Plus, the area is known for its' bird watching opportunities. Nearby attractions include Colorado's famous dinosaur territory, including the Museum of Western Colorado Dinosaur Journey, Rim Rock Rodeo, and the Colorado National Monument. Known locally as "The Monument," the Colorado National Monument features canyons cut deep into the sandstone with spectacular rock formations in some areas. The park hosts a wide range of wildlife, including red-tailed hawks, golden eagles, desert bighorn sheep and coyotes. The Rim Rock Drive is a scenic drive along the plateau, and nearby is Grand Mesa, which is the largest flat-topped mountain in the world.

West-central Colorado, near the Utah border, has a high desert climate. It can be classified as either semi-arid to arid, depending on location. Winters are cold and dry, and snowfall is usually light and doesn't remain on the ground long. Due to its location west of the Rockies, this region doesn't receive as much influence from the Chinook winds as other parts of state. Spring comes slowly to west-central Colorado, but quickens near June. Summers are hot and dry, with at least five days per year with temperatures at or above 100 degrees F. This region receives little precipitation year-round, with no seasonal spike. Sunshine is abundant, with 300 days of sunshine per year. Autumn cools rapidly, and the first freeze usually happens in mid-October.
