Clifton
is a small community located in Mesa County in west-central Colorado. As of the 2010 census, the population was 19,889. Clifton is considered part of the Grand Junction metropolitan area, which is situated in what is known as the Western Slope area. The Western Slope is known for its' many orchards, vineyards and seasonal fruit stands. Clifton is also near the scenic James M. Robb Colorado River State Park. Activities in the area include hiking, mountain biking, fishing, river rafting, swimming, picnicking and camping. There is a hiking trail system in the state park that weaves through woodlands along the riverbanks and offers great fishing and picnic spots. Other nearby attractions include the Colorado National Monument and Grand Mesa. The Colorado National Monument is a series of canyons and mesas with hiking trails among sandstone rock formations, arches and canyons that date back over 1.5 billion years. Hiking also abounds in Grand Mesa, the 10,000-foot high "Island in the Sky." Grand Mesa is the largest flat-topped mountain in the world and offers incredible trails for hiking, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. Just a short drive from Clifton is the town of Grand Junction, which offers unique shops, fine restaurants, art galleries and boutiques.

West-central Colorado, near the Utah border, has a high desert climate. It can be classified as either semi-arid to arid, depending on location. Winters are cold and dry, and snowfall is usually light and doesn't remain on the ground long. Due to its location west of the Rockies, this region doesn't receive as much influence from the Chinook winds as other parts of state. Spring comes slowly to west-central Colorado, but quickens near June. Summers are hot and dry, with at least five days per year with temperatures at or above 100 degrees F. This region receives little precipitation year-round, with no seasonal spike. Sunshine is abundant, with 300 days of sunshine per year. Autumn cools rapidly, and the first freeze usually happens in mid-October.
