Norwood
is a small town (population 438) located 33 miles west of Telluride along Colorado Highway 145 West (the Unaweep-Tabaguache Scenic Byway.) The drive into Norwood includes a scenic 40-minute drive down the red rock-rimmed San Miguel River Canyon. Another of southwestern Colorado's "best-kept secrets," the town of Norwood is situated atop Wright's Mesa at 7,000 feet above sea level, and to the south is the majestic 12,700-foot Lone Cone Mountain. This small, old-west town is a charming and peaceful retreat, where visitors can browse the arts and crafts shops, grab a bite to eat in one of the local restaurants or relax in one of the town's cozy bed & breakfast inns. Mountain biking and hiking is available in the nearby national forest and at the beautiful Uncompaghre Plateau. You can climb up to Lone Cone Peak, or spend the day at Miramonte Reservoir, a popular spot for windsurfing, swimming and water skiing. Spring is a popular time in the area for rafting, kayaking and canoeing on the San Miguel and Dolores Rivers. Winter brings many recreational possibilities, including world class skiing at nearby Telluride Ski and Golf Resort. Rodeo and horse racing have always been an important part of the Norwood community, and a new indoor arena and event center hosts many functions throughout the year. There are also several local riding establishments in the area that offer Western and English lessons and day long trail rides.

Southwest Colorado has a four-season alpine climate. This region is on the Western Slope of the Continental Divide at 7,200 feet above sea level. The combination of high desert plateau and Rocky Mountains to the north and east create an unusually mild climate. Temperatures here are much cooler in the summer than most of the surrounding southwestern United States. The area is also blessed with 300 days of sunshine per year. The climate of Colorado, in general, is difficult to describe because it varies so widely from place to place. The climate of any particular place in this region is profoundly affected by differences in elevation, and to a lesser degree, by the wind direction.
