Crawford
is a small town located in Delta County in the west central portion of the state. Situated at the foot of the Rocky Mountain's West Elk Range, Crawford is surrounded by extraordinary views and unique geological structures. The town is largely supported by tourism, due to its' close proximity to the Crawford Reservoir State Park, Paonia State Park, Gunnison National Forest, West Elk Wilderness and Black Canyon National Park. Crawford Reservoir provides year round fishing for northern pike, trout, bass, and crappie. Camping is available in the park, along with boating, skiing, and swimming on the lake. Scenic rugged mountains surround Paonia State Park and in springtime, the abundant wildflowers make it a "must see" for photographers. There are no hiking trails or groomed cross-country ski trails at Paonia, but horseback riding and skiing can be done on an informal basis along the shore of the lake. Paonia does offer camping at two separate campgrounds, and the lake is known for its northern pike fishing. The town of Crawford is also near the mountains of Gunnison National Forest, an area rich in mining history that offers hiking, rock climbing, kayaking and skiing. The local Chamber of Commerce describes the area around Crawford this way - "these are real mountains for real people, far removed from the celebrity jet set crowd in nearby Aspen and Vail."

Crawford Weather & Climate

West-central Colorado has a four-season climate that is either semi-arid or alpine, depending on location. Places that are just a short distance apart can have different weather, depending on the topography of the area. Valley areas have a semi-arid climate, while the mountains have an alpine climate. The wettest season in western Colorado is usually winter, while June is the driest month. Summers are mild in the mountains, sometimes with a high of only around 60 degrees. F. Thunderstorms are possible, and sometimes cause the temperature to drop dramatically. At the higher elevations, winters are cold with lots of snow, but with abundant sunshine in between storms. Lower areas on western slope of the Rockies have hot summer temperatures similar to those on the plains. Winters are slightly cooler due to warming winds.
