Dillon
is located just west of Denver in the heart of Summit County, near the famous Summit County ski areas. This lovely lakeside, mountain resort community has a full time population of about 2,700, but in peak tourist season it soars to around 5,200 people. A town with an interesting past, Dillon was incorporated in 1883 as a stage stop and trading post, but was moved three times. The last move was in 1956 when the town relocated to the shore of the new reservoir - the spot where it remains today. The Dillon Reservoir is called "one of Colorado's most pristine recreation areas," and is surrounded on all sides by gorgeous mountain views. This 3,300-acre recreation area is home to Dillon's deep-water marina, and offers boating, sailing and fishing. The Colorado Division of Wildlife stocks the Lake Dillon Reservoir annually with approximately 50,000 rainbow trout. Other summertime activities near Dillon include camping, horseback riding, hiking, whitewater rafting, jeep and ATV tours - even join a cattle drive. Wintertime activities near Dillon include snowmobiling, skiing, dog sledding and scenic sleigh rides though the mountains. To reach the Dillon from Denver - take Interstate 70 West to Exit 205, then turn left after exiting and drive two miles. The village of Dillon sits at the top of the hill.

Central Colorado has a more complex climate than most states in the United States. Even places a few miles apart can experience entirely different weather depending on the topography of the area. The valleys are classified as a semi-arid, continental climate, which becomes a mountain or alpine climate at higher elevations. Humid microclimates may also exist in some places. Abundant sunshine and low humidity is typical in all areas. Summers are mild to warm, and thunderstorms can cause a sudden drop in temperature. Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Solar radiation penetrates the thin atmosphere high in the mountains, which results in very pleasant temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers are often pictured in very light clothing, even though they're surrounded by snow.
