Denver
is the capital city and is located at the base of the Rocky Mountains in central Colorado. One of America's most beautiful and sophisticated cities, Denver has the largest park system and the tenth largest downtown of any city in the country. Downtown Denver is home to over 300 restaurants, a restored historic district with 90 bars and brewpubs, several museums and galleries, the largest performing arts center in the nation, three college campuses and a unique downtown amusement park called Six Flags Elitch Gardens. Gorgeous mountain views are visible from every downtown street and the whole area is centered on a mile-long pedestrian promenade that is lined with outdoor cafes and baskets overflowing with flowers. Denver is home to seven professional sports teams, and also offers horse racing, dog racing, Grand Prix and one of the world's largest rodeos - the National Western. Highlights of the city include the Denver Zoo (the fourth most popular zoo in the nation,) the Downtown Aquarium and the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Denver also has a growing music scene and is home to the famous Red Rocks Amphitheater, a 9,000-seat venue that was carved out of gigantic red rock boulders. City Park, the town's largest recreational park, offers an 18-hole golf course, 12 tennis courts, several ball fields, flower gardens, an interactive water-play area, a 25-acre fishing lake and several historical structures. Ruby Hill Park is a favorite spot for winter tobogganing and inner tubing and offers spectacular views of Denver's skyline. Several ski resorts are within a short drive of Denver and everything from hot air ballooning to guided horseback riding tours are available in the area.

North-central Colorado has a semi-arid, continental climate with over 300 days of sunshine per year. It's a common misconception that due to its close proximity to the mountains and world-class skiing, that north-central Colorado has harsh winters. This is not entirely true. While there may be occasional bitter temperatures, storms do not last long. Periods of snow alternate with mild periods. The snow quickly melts with the mild daytime winter temperatures. The hottest months are July and August with an average high temperature of 74 degrees. The coldest month is January with an average temperature of 30 degrees. This region has four distinct seasons, and being along the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains means weather patterns are subject to rapid, volatile, yet brief changes.
