Bailey
is located approximately 45 minutes southwest of Denver in north central Colorado. It's situated just inside the Lost Creek Wilderness Area along a curve in the South Platte River, and surrounded by the Pike National Forest. William L. Baily first settled the area in 1864, and in 1873 the railroad arrived to tap into the bountiful supply of timber in the Platte Canyon area. Today, an extensive network of old logging roads and connecting trails provides excellent mountain biking opportunities. The five-acre McGraw Memorial Park in Bailey features several historic structures and artifacts, including an 1864 log cabin and a one-room schoolhouse from 1894. The park also offers ten acres of trails and wilderness for exploration. Other attractions include nearby Guanella Pass Scenic and Historic Byway, which is one of premier places in the state to view the spectacular aspen trees in autumn. The pass is maintained all year round and is suitable for cars, bike riding and hiking, but large RVs are not recommended on the mountain byway. There's not much in the tiny downtown of Bailey, but it does offer several local eateries that make a charming place to stop for a quick lunch or dinner. Also, one other interesting bit of trivia - a herd of about 200 bighorn sheep live in the mountains just outside of town, so be on the lookout.

Central Colorado has a more complex climate than most states in the United States. The valleys are classified as a semi-arid, continental climate, which becomes a mountain or alpine climate at higher elevations. Humid microclimates may also exist in some places. Abundant sunshine and low humidity is typical in all areas. Summers are mild to warm, and thunderstorms can cause a sudden drop in temperature. Winters are cold and snowy, especially in the higher elevations of the Rocky Mountains. Solar radiation penetrates the thin atmosphere high in the mountains, which results in very pleasant temperatures during the winter. This is why skiers are often pictured in very light clothing, even though they're surrounded by snow.
