Rocky-Ford
is a small town located in Otero County in southeastern Colorado. The population of the city is approximately 4,300 residents. The city of Rocky Ford is well-known for its' farming of cantaloupes and watermelons. It gained international acclaim when United States President, Barack Obama, publicly endorsed their melons. Farmers in the area ship their delicious melons all over the country, and much of the melon seeds sold in the U.S. come from Rocky Ford. August and September are a great time to visit when roadside stands open for business and offer up all kinds of sweet juicy melons and other local produce. August is also when the city hosts the annual Arkansas Valley Fair, which celebrates the diverse cultures of the area and the outstanding farming community. The Fair includes horse races, stock shows, a carnival, rodeo, fiesta and Watermelon Days. Other attractions in town include the Rocky Ford Museum, which features a look at the history of the area from 1878 to date, including its geology, archaeology, ethnology, industries, as well as everyday life.

Rocky Ford Weather & Climate

Southeast Colorado has a continental semi-arid climate with four distinct seasons. This terrain is rolling plains, with short prairie grass and sagebrush. Summers are hot and dry and winters are cold and snowy. The eastern plains of Colorado receives very little rainfall. Much of the area relies on irrigation. Severe hunderstorms are possible in the summertime, and sometimes these storms form land spouts and tornadoes. The plains region receives some of the worst hail storms of the entire North American continent. Winters in this region are cold and dry with significant snowfall. Very cold temperatures in winter alternate with surprisingly warmer days. Spring weather is very changeable and autumn is pleasant and dry.
