La-Junta
is located along the Arkansas River in southeast Colorado. The population is approximately 7,500. The city of La Junta is the county seat for Otero County and lies east of Pueblo. Ja Lunta was known for its' Army Air Force training base during World War II. It's also been used as a setting for a few movies, including 1973's "Badlands," and the western miniseries, "The Chisholms." One of the more unique attractions in La Junta is The Caboose State Bank, established in 1893 and housed in an old red caboose and remodeled with antiques, including a teller line from the late 1890s. Other attractions in town include the Koshare Indian Museum at Otero Junior Collage, and the Purgatoire River Track Site, which is one of the largest dinosaur track sites in North America. Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site, a major trading post along the Santa Fe Trail, lies north of La Junta. Sometimes called "Fort William," for one of the builders of the fort, Bent's Old Fort was constructed in 1833 to establish trade between the Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho Plains Indians and trappers for buffalo robes. For 16 years, the fort was the only major settlement on the Santa Fe Trail between Missouri and Mexican settlements to the west. It was destroyed in 1849 under "mysterious circumstances." The fort was later reconstructed and is now a National Historic Site and National Historic Landmark.

La Junta Weather & Climate

Southeast Colorado has a continental semi-arid climate with four distinct seasons. This terrain is rolling plains, with short prairie grass and sagebrush. Summers are hot and dry and winters are cold and snowy. The eastern plains of Colorado receives very little rainfall. Much of the area relies on irrigation. Severe hunderstorms are possible in the summertime, and sometimes these storms form land spouts and tornadoes. The plains region receives some of the worst hail storms of the entire North American continent. Winters in this region are cold and dry with significant snowfall. Very cold temperatures in winter alternate with surprisingly warmer days. Spring weather is very changeable and autumn is pleasant and dry.
